Writer-in-residence Caoilinn Hughes’ debut novel Orchid & the Wasp (Oneworld 2018) was shortlisted for the 2018 Butler Literary Award. Her poetry collection Gathering Evidence (Carcanet 2014) won the Irish Times Shine/Strong Award and was shortlisted for four other prizes. She won The Moth International Short Story Prize 2018. A fellow of the James Merrill House, the Bogliasco Foundation, Faber and La Napoule Art Foundation, she has been awarded a Tin House Workshop Scholarship, a Literature Bursary Award from the Arts Council of Ireland and The Ireland Funds Monaco Award. Her writing has appeared in Granta, Tin House, POETRY, The Stinging Fly, BBC Radio3 and elsewhere. She holds a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and she was recently Visiting Writer at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

Martedì 5 marzo alle 18.00 in via Tommaso Pendola 37 a Siena, proseguono gli StARTers – Assaggi d’Arte, con un ospite consolidato del Siena Art Institute, il musicologo Guido Burchi. Una conversazione informale ad ingresso libero sul tema "L’Operetta: nascita e trionfo”. L’autorevole studioso, presenterà con la raffinata ironia che contraddistingue la sua oratoria, alcuni dei grandi capolavori musicali del compositore e violoncellista Jacques Offenbach.
 
Nato a Colonia, Offenbach, direttore d'orchestra al Théâtre français, poi impresario dei Bouffes-Parisiens, e della Gaîté, compose oltre un centinaio di operette.
Grazie all'incomparabile vis comica, alla genialità dell'intuizione teatrale e della caratterizzazione dei tipi e degli ambienti, all'estrosa varietà del discorso musicale, espressione sempre di un gusto artistico del tutto originale, è uno dei maggiori esponenti del genere dell’operetta. 
Tra le sue operette più famose si ricordano: Orphée aux enfers (1858), La belle Hélène (1864), La vie parisienne (1866), La Grande-duchesse de Gérolstein (1867), La Périchole (1868), La fille du tambur-major (1875). L’opéracomique Les Contes d'Hoffmann, viene considerata da alcuni esperti il suo capolavoro, purtroppo non finito, a causa della morte nel 1880; l'opera infatti venne completata nella strumentazione da E. Guiraud e presentata al pubblico solo nel 1881.
 
Nelle scorse stagioni, Guido Burchi, già consulente musicologo dell'Accademia Musicale Chigiana e professore di Storia della Musica presso l'Università degli Studi di Siena, ha portato la grande musica agli StARTers – Assaggi d'Arte con incontri dedicati Giacomo Puccini, a Wagner, a Verdi e a Čajkovskij. Dopo la chiacchierata dello scorso novembre - dedicata a Mozart e Da Ponte - Guido Burchi tornerà ad essere ospite del Siena Art Institute per un'altra incursione nel patrimonio musicale.
 
L’evento, a ingresso libero, si chiuderà con una sessione di domande e risposte (Q&A) e con un aperitivo.

Susan Barbour’s recent work focuses on smell and its effect on the verbal imagination. Drawing on her background as a poet, scholar, and sommelier, she is writing a hybrid book of memoir and theory that explores the relation between text and nose.

Lorenzo Cianchi è un artista toscano e cofondatore del collettivo milanese Rio Grande. Al Siena Art Institute parlerà del suo lavoro sulla messa in discussione delle icone in relazione ai contesti che le hanno generate e del suo ultimo progetto artistico attualmente in atto a Certaldo.  

Seguirà un Open Studio con opere d’arte e work-in-progress degli studenti del Siena Art Institute e della Siena School for Liberal Arts e Susan Barbour, artista in residenza al Siena Art Institute.  

L’incontro, a ingresso libero, si concluderà con un aperitivo.

Lorenzo Cianchi is a Tuscan artist and co-founder of the Milanese collective Rio Grande. At the Siena Art Institute he will talk about his work the questioning  icons in relation to the contexts that generated them and his latest artistic project currently underway in Certaldo.

Nei suoi viaggi Christian Balzano ha visitato interi continenti alla ricerca di ispirazione per i suoi progetti artistici, che realizza utilizzando tecniche e materiali tradizionali tra i quali pellami, vetro, lamine d’oro e cristallo, oltre a pittura, scultura, installazioni site-specific e video. 

In his travels, Christian Balzano has visited entire continents in search of inspiration for his artistic projects, which he makes using traditional techniques and materials including leather, glass, gold leaf and crystal, as well as painting, sculpture, site-specific installations and video.

Luise Sejersen is a visual artist living and working in Copenhagen. She works with issues concerning religious structures, collective consciousness and the conditions of spirituality in contemporary Northern Europe. She explores the boundaries between different artistic genres and has lately been working with icon painting technique and video-performance. She holds a MFA from The Funen Art Academy and a BA in Art History from the University of Copenhagen.

Luise Sejersen, artista visiva, lavora intorno alle questioni riguardanti le strutture religiose, la coscienza collettiva e le condizioni di spiritualità. Esplora i confini tra diversi generi artistici, ma ultimamente si concentra sulla tecnica di pittura di icone e performance video.

L’artista Francesca Banchelli, nata a Montevarchi, si è formata presso il Saint Martin College di Londra. Nel suo lavoro contempla l’utilizzo di media diversi, andando dal disegno alla performance, abitualmente intersecati con il video e l’installazione.

Boaz Aharonovitch was born in in Israel, and his artistic practice is based in Tel-Aviv. His main practice is photography, but his works also include drawings, installations and video works. He received both his MFA and BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art.
