StARTers moves to Palazzo delle Papesse for a special series of talks
StARTers: art tastings will be hosted by the evocative reinassancePalazzo: a series of three talks with the Siena Art current Artists-in-residence and in collaboration with Palazzo delle Papesse.
Palazzo delle Papesse is one of the most influential contemporary art spaces in Siena. Hosting temporary exhibitions as well as interactive laboratories focused on museum management and cultural design, Papesse is a perfect fit for StARTers.
The Siena Art Institute created StARTers: art tastings in 2011, with the intent of offering a free space to foster cultural exchange between the local community and artists, writers, and other international professionals. Through the years, the Siena Art Institute has collaborated with countless local organizations and cultural spaces to deepen the relationship with the local community, offering its Resident Artists an opportunity to immerse themselves in the dynamic space of Siena.
With their newly introduced Papesse LAB, Palazzo delle Papesse has started offering a series of hands-on activities aimed at encouraging active participation and reflection from its audience.
For the mini-series of talks we have selected three artists through the PRATT Institute Partner residencies programme:
Gregory Drasler: Fashion Designer, USA
Gregory Drasler graduated from the University of Illinois and has lived and painted in New York City for the past 40 years. On Moving to New York in 1983 he began showing at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY, and has painted and exhibited regularly since, most recently with an exhibition titled External Drive at the Betty Cuningham Gallery in 2023. Prior exhibitions include shows at The Queens Museum, Queens New York, the Center for Contemporary Art in Chicago, The Whitney Stamford, in Stamford, CT, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA, and Artist Space, New York, NY among others.
Gregory Drasler is the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a National Endowment of the Arts fellowship, a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois, among others. For the past 20 years Drasler has taught painting and lectured at several schools including Princeton University, Williams College, Hofstra University, Montclair State University. For the past 20 years he has taught painting at the Pratt Institute of Art.
Kerry Ryan: Visual Artist, USA
Kerry Ryan is a multidisciplinary artist and educator working primarily in video and performance. Originally from the United States, Ryan earned her MFA from the Pratt Institute and began exhibiting in alternative spaces and museums shortly thereafter. Her work has been shown at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA, the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, OH, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN. Her most recent solo project, Choreographies of the Ordinary, was presented at the Kitchen, New York, NY in 2023.
Ryan has received fellowships and awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts, Creative Capital, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. She has been artist-in-residence at Yaddo, Skowhegan, and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Over the past decade, Ryan has lectured and taught media arts and performance studies at institutions including NYU, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Rutgers University. She currently teaches video and time-based media at the Pratt Institute.
Christopher Radcliff: Film Studies, USA
Christopher Radcliff is a filmmaker based in the United States. After receiving his MFA from the Pratt Institute, he began screening his work at film festivals and contemporary art venues internationally. His films have been presented at Cannes Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Berlinale, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY. Most recently, his feature The Strange Ones was distributed by Vertical Entertainment and has been featured on major streaming platforms. Prior exhibitions and screenings include programs at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, BAMcinemaFest in Brooklyn, NY, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, CA, and Anthology Film Archives in New York, NY.
Radcliff is the recipient of several awards including a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, a Jerome Foundation grant, and support from the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP). He has served as visiting faculty and guest lecturer at institutions such as Columbia University, the New School, and the Maryland Institute College of Art. For the past several years, he has taught film production and theory at the Pratt Institute.
