StARTers talk with artist-in-residence Susan Barbour March 12th

Our current artist-in-residence, Susan Barbour, will lead a presentation on Tuesday March 12th at 6pm at the Siena Art Institute as part of our weekly cycle of public talks "StARTers: Assaggi d'arte." The event will be in English, followed by Q&A and refreshments, and will be offered free and open to the public.

Susan Barbour's recent work focuses on smell and its effect on the verbal imagination. Drawing on her background as a poet, scholar, and sommelier, she is writing a hybrid book of memoir and theory that explores the relation between text and nose. As part of her research for this project, she also conducts wine-tastings and workshops in the psychological reactions to human body odor.
Barbour’s interest in the body’s traces extends to her visual art practice as well. Her poetry book manuscript, NUDE UNTANGLING HER HAIR, recounts her experience of learning to draw while working as an artist's model and incorporates line drawings of female nudes she makes using her own hair. She has exhibited her artwork in galleries in Los Angeles and New York and has shows forthcoming in the U.K.
Barbour earned a B.A. in Literature from Dartmouth, an M.A. in The Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins, and a D.Phil. in English Literature from Oxford, where she was a Clarendon Scholar. She also holds the Level 4 Diploma from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust and is a certified French Wine Scholar. Her poetry and essays have appeared in literary magazines including Five Dials, The Paris Review, Catapult,The Los Angeles Review of Books, and Oxford Poetry, and her scholarship has been published in academic journals such as Textual Practice, Transatlantica, and The Oxford Review of English Studies. She has been the recipient of fellowships from The James B. Reynolds Foundation, The Rothermere American Studies Institute, The Huntington Library, The Bogliasco Foundation, The Beinecke Library at Yale, The Jentel Artist Residency, The Dora Maar House/Brown Foundation, and The Institute for Art and Olfaction. She has lectured at Johns Hopkins, École Polytechnique, and Merton College, Oxford and also held research positions at Columbia University and Caltech.

Artista, poetessa, sommelier: Assaggi d'Arte con Susan Barbour, artista in residenza al Siena Art Institute per il mese di Marzo
Martedì 12 Marzo 2019, ore 18.00, Siena. Come è possibile usare le parole per descrivere il processo creativo che porta alla realizzazione di un'opera d'arte? E qual è l'effetto degli odori sull'immaginazione verbale? Ne parleremo questo martedì all’appuntamento settimanale con il ciclo “StARTers - Assaggi d'Arte” del Siena Art Institute. Protagonista della serata sarà Susan Barbour, artista in residenza al Siena Art Institute per il mese di marzo. L'incontro, a ingresso libero, si concluderà con un aperitivo.
Prendendo spunto dal suo background di poetessa, studiosa e sommelier, l'artista multisensoriale esplorerà la relazione tra olfatto e testo scritto, parole e arti visive, attraverso memorie e riflessioni estratte dalle sue poesie e dal suo manoscritto. Opera sperimentale, quest'ultima, ancora in attesa di pubblicazione, a cavallo tra teoria ed autobiografia. Un progetto che esplora la relazione tra testo scritto e odorato che ha richiesto all'artista un lungo lavoro di ricerca attraverso workshop, degustazioni, esperimenti sulle reazioni psicologiche agli odori emessi dal corpo umano.
L'interesse di Susan Barbour per il corpo si estende anche alla sua attività di artista visiva: le sue opere sono realizzate combinando la tecnica del disegno e i capelli dell'artista stessa.
Appuntamento dunque con Susan Barbour per martedì 12 Marzo alle 18.00 presso la sede del Siena Art Institute in Via Tommaso Pendola 37, Siena. L’incontro, a ingresso libero, rientra nel calendario di StARTers - Assaggi d’Arte del Siena Art Institute e si concluderà con un aperitivo.
