Open Studio: Laura Marsh 13 agosto ore 17.00

(ENGLISH TEXT BELOW)

OPEN STUDIO: LAURA MARSH  AUGUST 13th 5pm

Laura Marsh, American textile artist, will open her studio to the public for a free entry event as the conclusion of her artistic residency in Siena nears.

Open Studio on Monday August 13 2018 from 5pm to 6:15 pm at the Siena Art Institute (Via Tommaso Pendola 37, Siena). Presentation of the artist's works and career at 5:45 pm.
During the event, the local community and students of the Siena Art Institute are invited to explore the relationship between Laura Marsh's contemporary artistic textile practice and Sienese culture and traditions. The textile works of Marsh incorporate fabrics donated by Sienese residents and reference intellectuals and activists of the feminist movement, such as the French thinker Voltaire and the American journalist Gloria Steinem.

Laura Marsh comes from a US working class family with a long tradition of artisan tailoring. During her residency in Siena, the artist fell in love with the city's strong local identity, and she therefore decided to draw inspiration from the flags of the districts and the local textile traditions.

Join us Monday August 13th to meet the American textile artist Laura Marsh! Free and open to the public.

Also on view during the Open Studio event will be paintings and drawings created by the Summer Students of the Siena Art Institute, from Brandeis University (Boston, USA)

About the artist:
Laura Marsh is textile artist with a social practice. She defines installations for viewers to engage with tactile objects, poetic phrases, and social experiences. Her weavings contain social mottos, and immersive environments hold communal space for viewers to gather and share personal narratives and creative practice. From two generations of sewers, Marsh believes in the do-it-yourself approach to making work that is accessible and approachable.
Originally from a working class family in Montrose, Pennsylvania, her hometown has transformed into a fracking region. Marsh regards her practice as multilayered and transformative, and she supports the activation of unused sites and site-specific installation. Marsh received her MFA from Yale University School of Art and a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. Marsh has exhibited nationally at venues including Dimensions Variable, Miami, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Printed Matter, Field Projects, Newman Popiashvili Gallery, and Tilton Gallery in NY. She is a current artist in residence at ArtCenter South Florida in Miami Beach and the Curator of Exhibitions at the Art and Culture Center in Hollywood, FL.
