Post-Baccalaureate Program

Application Procedures:

Admission to our post-baccalaureate program is based on a holistic appraisal of your entire application packet (see below for application packet requirements.)  Since post-baccalaureate students are at different points in their professional and artistic development, the various application components will be considered in total.  The most important elements of your application are your portfolio and your artist’s statement, since these give us the best understanding of your artistic practice, so please take the time to thoughtfully assemble these materials.

All application materials must be received within the deadline stated for each program: Nov 1 for the Spring and April 30 for the Fall semester.
..........................................................................................................................................................
Required application materials:

* €40
Application Fee (paid by wire transfer or PayPal)
* Artist’s Statement (see below for Artist's Statement Requirements)
* Art/Writing Portfolio with Portfolio Description Sheet (See below for Portfolio Submission Requirements)
* Post-Baccalaureate Application Form (including the Statement of Intent if you wish to apply for a scholarship with The Siena Art Institute)
* Health Form from your Doctor   (mailed as hardcopy or as an emailed pdf)
* Post-Bacc Financial Statement Form (if you wish to apply for a Siena Art Institute scholarship)
* 2 Letters of Recommendation

(Recommenders should be someone who is very familiar with your artistic practice and/or your engagement with social outreach activities.  This could be a former teacher, supervisor, or mentor.)
* 1 copy of your CV
* 1 official copy of your Undergraduate Transcript.  (mailed to the Siena Art Institute directly from your undergraduate university's Registrar.)

..........................................................................................................................................................
All forms can be found on the
 Post-Baccalaureate Forms Page.

All completed application materials (except your official transcript and your application fee) can be sent as email attachments to:
info@sienaart.org

An official copy of your undergraduate Transcript should be
mailed to The Siena Art Institute directly from your undergraduate university's Registrar.  An unofficial digital transcript is acceptable only if it is emailed directly from the Registrar to info@sienaart.org.  Hardcopies of your official transcript should be mailed to:
Siena Art Institute
Via Tommasso Pendola 37
53100 Siena (Italy)
Your other application materials can also be sent as hardcopy via the post, but we prefer emailed pdfs.

International applicants must make sure that all application materials are in either English or Italian.  Letters of Recommendation, Transcripts, etc that are in another language must be sent in the original language along with a copy translated into either English or Italian.

Make sure that all of your application materials are all clearly labeled with your name, to help us identify them during our review of applications.

=============================================================================

Artist's Statement:

Your artist's statement should be appx 1-2 pages, and is an opportunity for you to express the motivations and intentions of your artwork.   Rather than having your artist's statement list all the materials and symbolic associations of each piece in your portfolio, instead use your artist's statement as an opportunity to tie together the various branches of your artistic practice.  You may also choose to discuss your educational background or other influences that led you to begin pursuing a career as an artist.

Please sent your artist's statement, along with the rest of your application materials, as an email attachment to:
info@sienaart.org

Portfolio Submission Requirements: All portfolios, in either formats (attachment or website link) should be emailed to  info@sienaart.org.  Put “Portfolio Submission_(your name)”  in the subject line. Please select examples of your work that best reflect your creative accomplishments to date.  Your portfolio is the most important part of your application, so please make sure that your work is presented as professionally as possible, in whatever format you are using.  Students’ portfolios can include work completed as independent projects or as class assignments.  Your portfolio need not reflect a uniform style.  Rather, this is your opportunity to show us the depth and breadth of your artistic practice.

We welcome you to submit work created in collaboration with other artists/writers.  However, your description of this work should EXPLICITLY state the nature of this collaboration and your role in the project.  Obvoiusly, your portfolio should present YOUR work.  (Plagarism is a criminal offense and will be reported. You must EXPICITLY state if your work uses quotations or directly borrows from source material.)  In general, please make sure that you are as clear as possible in describing the nature of your work. Along with your work samples, we ask applicants to include a Portfolio Description Sheet which provides basic information to contextualize and describe the work in your portfolio.  ........................................................................................................................................................
Creative Writing Portfolio Requirements:Applicants applying with a writing portfolio should submit:
* Portfolio of 5-10 writing samples

*Writing Portfolio Description Sheet

Your Portfolio of writing samples should reflect the breadth and quality of your writing.  Each sample should be no longer than 6000 words.  Please select 6000 word-excerpts from longer works.

Writing samples should be in either English or Italian.  For works in other languages, please include a sample of the original along with a translation in either English or Italian.

Your Writing Portfolio Description Sheet should list the following information for each piece:
-Title
-Year Written
-Type of Work + Context of the Work
(For Example:          Sonnet, Created as an Assignment for "Word Art" Seminar.
or         Diary Excerpt, Part of an Ongoing Personal Project
or          Epilogue, Part of my Novel, "The Glowing Sun." )
-Additional Background Information   (Publication, Context within Body of Work, etc )

Interdisciplinary Portfolio Requirements: If your artistic portfolio combines visual art and writing, please send a total of 8-12 works, following the appropriate portfolio submission requirements for the various media (see below).

Visual Art Portfolio Requirements:-Your portfolio submissions should be of the highest quality (provided that they are less than 2.5 MB).  For still images and videos, take time and consideration in lighting, background, and camera configuration to avoid glare, cluttered backgrounds, distorted images, etc.  In general make sure to present your work as professionally as possible.   -Images that have been digitally manipulated must be clearly stated as such.  For example, an image of a sculpture or painting should not be digitally edited, unless the digital image is considered the artwork, and the sculpture/painting is considered only the source material for the photograph.  In that case, the portfolio description form should describe the dimensions and material of the digital photograph, not the sculpture/painting.  Overall, make sure that your descriptions are as clear as possible in describing the nature of your artwork.Visual Art Portfolios can be submitted either as email attachmentsor as a website:

Visual Art Portfolios Sent as Email Attachments:Your portfolio files can be sent as email attachments sent to info@sienaart.org.  Put “Portfolio Submission_(your name)”  in the subject line.
You should include:
-Digital Portfolio of 10 artworks (.jpg, mp3, .pdf or mov files each no larger than 2.5 MB, sent either as individual files or compressed into a zip archive.)

-Visual Art Portfolio Description Sheet  To ensure that your files are easily downloadable, we request that each individual file is no larger than 2.5 MB.  Please compress your files accordingly, and consider consolidating your files in a zip archive folder.  Please title your files according to this format:  LastName_FirstName_1.jpg  This ensures that your portfolio images are easily identified as YOURS.
Your Visual Art Portfolio Description Sheet should list the following information for each piece:
-Title
-Year Created
-Materials (or type/genre of time-based work.)
-Dimensions or Duration
-Additional Background Information
Additional Background Information should list any relevant collaborators or source material, and the context in which the work was made.
For example:

or      Mobile created in collaboration with youth participants from the Blue Sky Project, installed at the Dayton International Airport.)

Your online portfolio should also include descriptions of the artwork providing the information requested on our Visual Art Portfolio Description Sheet.

Please be aware that we may not be able to view the entirety of your website if it includes more than 10 images, so make sure your site is arranged to clearly feature your best work.

Information on your website must be either in English or Italian.  If your website is in a different language, please use the email portfolio submission process, but feel free to also include a link to your website.
