Jo Shapcott   Visiting Artist, Sept 2012


Poet, UK

Born in London, Jo Shapcott was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and St Hilda’s College, Oxford, and later won a Harkness Fellowship to Harvard. She has worked as Education Officer at the South Bank Centre, and for the Arts Council Literature Department. Her first collection, Electroplating the Baby (Newcastle upon Tyne, 1988) won the Commonwealth Prize, and her second, Phrase Book(Oxford, 1992) was a Poetry Book Society Choice. She was twice a winner of England's National Poetry Competition.  She was the winner of the prestigious Costa Prize for literature for 2010 for her collection Of Mutability, published by Faber. Tender Taxes, her versions of Rilke, was published in 2001. Her most recent collection, Of Mutability, was published in 2010 and won the Costa Book Award. In 2011 Jo Shapcott was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry.  Jo is a Patron of Poet in the City, London, and a former President of the Poetry Society.
