August Studio Program
Program Description

During August, the Siena Art Institute opens our studio spaces to professional artists who wish to work independently in Siena for 3 weeks.

The session runs from August 1st to August 21st.

Unlike our
Residency Program (in which one selected artist at a time is invited to work in Siena for a period of four weeks), the August Studio Program allows multiple guest artists to be working alongside each other.  The goal is to create in the month of August a dynamic, supportive, and informal community of working artists from around the world.

The August Studio Program Includes, for all participants:
  • Studio Space at our location in Siena’s historic center
  • Aug 1 Welcome Dinner
  • Wednesday Evening Drinks & Guest Artist Talks at Palazzo Ravizza.
  • Aug 6 Afternoon Studio Visit with Photographer & Metal Artist Jackie Tune with trip to Monteriggioni hilltown.
  • 2 Open Studio Nights with Refreshments
  • Aug 20 Final Dinner
  • Program Support Staff

The August Studio Program also holds many optional activities and excursions throughout the 3 weeks:
  • Fri Aug 5: Fortezza Enoteca Wine Tasting
  • Sun August 7: Day Trip to Certaldo & Studio Visit with printmaker Walter Sarfatti, including a walking tour of the town with Art Historian guide and a short hike in the surrounding countryside.
  • Mon Aug 8: Evening Apertifs Downtown
  • Sat Aug 13: Sunset hike
  • Sun Aug 14: Trip to San Gimignano to view galleries and museums and the famous frescoes of this lively hilltown.
  • Fri Aug 19: Monte Chiaro Vineyard Trip & Wine Tasting
  • Aug 13-16 Siena's historic Palio Horse-Race, amazing city-wide spectacle.  For more information on the Palio, visit  http://palio.comune.siena.it/main.asp?id=0  or :  http://www.ilpalio.org/palioenglish.htm

Visit the August Studio Program Calendar for the schedule of these activities.

There are also two optional workshops offered during our August Studio Program:
  • Aug 8-10 Printmaking 3-day Workshop with Walter Sarfatti
  • Aug 17-19 Book Arts 3-day Workshop with Jennifer Storey-MacIntosh

-The Printmaking workshop will make use of our etching and engraving facilities.  More information on Walter Sarfatti can be found on his faculty profile page.

-The Book Arts workshop will introduce basic techniques of book binding, and will discuss the historic book-making techniques of which exemplary examples can be found in Siena.  More information on Jennifer Storey-MacIntosh can be found on her faculty profile page.

-There is an extra fee of €200 for either of these workshops, which includes the cost of materials.
