Oct 6th, stARTers with Ellen Driscoll

StARTers talk October 6 with artist Ellen Driscoll:

Project Fellow at the Siena Art Institute, Ellen Driscoll, will discuss her current artistic projects, connecting to the territory of Siena, exploring ecological and cultural cross-pollination in an era of globalization.

On October 6, the next appointment for the weekly series of talks at the Siena Art Institute "StARTers- assaggi d'arte" will feature American artist Ellen Driscoll, who is the Fall 2015 Project Fellow at the Siena Art Institute.  Ellen Driscoll is exploring the particular ecological forces at play in Siena today through a series of drawings and mixed media work. Her current project "Alveare" (Hive) will mine the history and poetics of local plant ecology as a lens through which to look at larger issues of social and cultural cross-pollination in an era of globalization.The talk will be held at the Siena Art Institute Tuesday October 6 at 6 pm (via Tommaso Pendola 37, first floor, free and open to the public) and will be presented in English.  

Ellen Driscoll’s work encompasses sculpture, drawing, and public art installation. Recent large scale installations include "Night to Day, Here and Away" for the Sarasota National Cemetery, “Distant Mirrors” for the Providence River, “FastForwardFossil #2” at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, and “Revenant” and “Phantom Limb” for Nippon Ginko, Hiroshima, Japan. Earlier works include “The Loophole of Retreat” at the Whitney Museum at Phillip Morris, “As Above, So Below” for Grand Central Terminal (a suite of 20 mosaic and glass images for the tunnels at 45th, 47th, and 48th Streets), “Catching the Drift”, a restroom for the Smith College Museum of Art, and “Wingspun” for the International Arrivals corridor at Raleigh Durham airport. Ms. Driscoll has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Bunting Institute at Harvard University, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Massachusetts Council on the Arts, the LEF Foundation, the Rhode Island Foundation, Anonymous Was a Woman, and most recently a 2014 Fine Arts Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her work is included in major public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of Art.

Presentations in the weekly series "stARTers: assaggi d'arte" take place every Tuesday at 6.00 pm at the Siena Art Institute, followed by refreshments, and are always free and open to the public.  StARTers is a series of conversations with artists and creative professionals of international repute explores art as an inventive process, meeting of experiences, a tool for change. For more details, visit the website for stARTers:
