Mairéad Byrne

Mairéad Byrne emigrated from Ireland to the United States in 1994. In Ireland she worked as a journalist and arts centre director, also writing two plays which were produced at the Project Arts Centre in Dublin, and a short book about James Joyce. Her poetry collections include You Have to Laugh: New and Selected Poems (Barrow Street 2013), The Best of (What’s Left of) Heaven (Publishing Genius 2010), Talk Poetry (Miami University Press 2007), SOS Poetry (/ubu Editions 2007), Nelson & The Huruburu Bird (Wild Honey Press 2003), and most recently Famosa na sua cabeça, translated and edited by Dirceu Villa (Dobra Editorial 2015). Her collaborations with visual artists include three books with Irish artists, and Jennifer’s Family, with photojournalist Louisa Marie Summer (Amsterdam: Schilt 2012). She earned a PhD in Theory and Cultural Studies from Purdue University (2001) and works as a Professor of Poetry + Poetics at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence; she also served as Chief Critic for the RISD European Honors Program in Rome (2013).
