Maelee Lee

Visiting Artist, Jan 30 - Feb 28, 2013

Visual artist specialized in installation art and painting; South Korea

Contemporary media artist and adjunct professor of Art at Mokpo National University
Korea
Lee was born in Gang-jin, Korea, and is now a lecturer at Mokpo National University (where she received her BFA) and at Chosun University (where she received her MFA and Ph.D in Fine Arts). Her work tends to deal with feminist issues and gender identity. She is regarded as a prominent feminist artist relating the traditional gender roles of the conservative Korean society. However, as her artistic category is based on confronting delicate and deeply human subjects, Lee’s work is universal and truly international.

Lee has taken part in exhibitions in all around the world, including New York, Beijing, Bulgaria, and Greece. She has also been invited to take part in numerous important international fine arts biennales, festivals and fairs. She took part in the highly prestigious Gwangju Biennale in 2012. She recently received the “2012 Sofia Paper Art Fest” award. In the United States, Lee’s works have been exhibited to the public as part of both one-person and group events at several important New York galleries, including Chelsea Art Museum (2011) and Elga Wimmer Gallery (2010).
